Sleep problems in children: – Getting plenty of sleep is crucial to the health and development of a young child, but nearly half of children experience sleep issues at some point in their childhood. Common sleep disorders in children include sleep apnea and insomnia, as well as parasomnias, which are disruptive sleep-related behaviors such as sleepwalking and night terrors. Children can also experience Narcolepsy with or without cataplexy.
Sleep Testing with Children – Depending on the sleep complaints, various testing is available for children, however most often these will need to be performed in a sleep center monitored by a sleep technologist. Sleep Testing can be a little difficult for children as they have to wear many sensors and sleep in a strange place. Sleep Centers do their best to accommodate children however children that are under 6 years of age or have special needs or conditions tend to have difficulty adjusting. A parent or guardian usually is required to stay with the child in the room throughout testing.
Sleep Disorders symptoms in children – Snoring, breathing pauses during sleep, problems with sleeping through the night, difficulty staying awake during the day, unexplained decrease in daytime performance, unusual events during sleep, teeth grinding, bedwetting, restless sleep, and difficulty waking up in the morning. Children with sleep disorders tend to be hyperactive during the daytime in school or other activities and may be suspected of ADHD.
If your child exhibits any of these signs, talk to your pediatrician and/or Board-Certified Sleep Specialist experienced with sleep in children.
