Adult Sleep

Adult sleep and sleep disorders

Bedtime tips:

Follow these tips to establish healthy sleep habits:

  • Keep a consistent sleep schedule. Get up at the same time every day, even on weekends or during vacations.
  • Set a bedtime that is early enough for you to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep.
  • Don’t go to bed unless you are sleepy.
  • If you don’t fall asleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed. Go do a quiet activity without a lot of light exposure. It is especially important to not get on electronics.
  • Establish a relaxing bedtime routine.
  • Use your bed only for sleep and sex.
  • Make your bedroom quiet and relaxing. Keep the room at a comfortable, cool temperature.
  • Limit exposure to bright light in the evenings.
  • Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
  • Don’t eat a large meal before bedtime. If you are hungry at night, eat a light, healthy snack.
  • Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet.
  • Avoid consuming caffeine in the afternoon or evening.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol before bedtime.
  • Reduce your fluid intake before bedtime.

Sleep problems in adults: – Sleep problems in adults can significantly impact overall health, safety, and quality of life. Here are some common types of sleep disorders: Insomnia, Sleep Apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome, Narcolepsy, Shift Work Sleep Disorder, and many others.  Sleep Disorders generally limit sleep times, reduce the quality of sleep, increase the number of awakenings, and reduce sleep stages needed to restore the body and mind.

Sleep Testing for adults– Sleep testing for adults consists of Polysomnography (PSG), the gold standard of sleep testing, Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT), and specialty studies like the MSLT or MWT.  Most testing is performed in a sleep center while the home sleep apnea testing is done in the home.  Testing in the sleep center includes far more monitored parameters and a Registered Technologist to monitor, document, and correct any signal issues.  Home Testing generally is limited to a few key parameters of monitoring and no trained sleep staff monitor the study. In facility testing also may allow for treatment of OSA in the same night were home testing does not.
